Welcome to the lodge
The Beaver Gazette is where beaver aficionados come for dam engineering, reintroduction news, castoreum trivia and the occasional tail-slap of outrage. It is also a working test bed for consent management: seven sites, one per legal template, each loading the same six consent-requiring services.
Beaver basics
- Beavers are the second-largest rodents in the world, after the capybara, and the only animal besides humans that routinely reshapes whole river systems to suit itself.
- There are two species: the North American beaver (Castor canadensis) and the European beaver (Castor fiber). They have different chromosome counts and cannot interbreed.
- A beaver's orange incisors are iron-reinforced, self-sharpening, and never stop growing.
- Beavers can stay submerged for up to 15 minutes, close their nostrils and ears, and see underwater through a transparent third eyelid.
- Beaver ponds store water, filter sediment, recharge groundwater, buffer floods and droughts, and create some of the richest wetland habitat on the continent.
- A colony's dam and lodge are maintained year-round; in winter they live off a cache of branches stored underwater next to the lodge entrance.
